Dr. Darren Patrick

Dr. Darren Patrick is a native of Salyersville, KY and graduated from Paintsville High School. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biology magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry.

He completed his externships at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and in private optometry and ophthalmology practices in Tuskegee, Alabama. Dr. Patrick has been named Kentucky’s Young Optometrist of the Year and received a citation from Kentucky’s House of Representatives for his exceptional and dedicated service to his patients and the advancement of eye care in the Commonwealth. Dr. Patrick underwent training in laser and surgical procedures with Northeastern State University. He is an active member of the Greater Louisville Optometric Society, Kentucky Optometric Association, Southern Council of Optometrists, and American Optometric Association.

Dr. Patrick is a member of the Kentucky Optometric Association Board, as well as the board for the Nelson County Community Clinic. He is a trustee of the Central Kentucky Optometric Association. He volunteers with the Kentucky Vision Project, Bardstown Lion’s Club, InfantSee, as well as at local school vision screenings and health fairs. He was president of the Bardstown Optimist Club, which serves the youth of the community. He is a member of the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Patrick has two sons, William and Mason, and they reside in Bardstown. Dr. Patrick enjoys playing music, traveling, and biking.



Dr. Holly Schat

Dr. Holly Schat is a native of Providence, KY, graduating from Webster County High School. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in biology & chemistry from Eastern Kentucky University.  She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry.

Dr. Schat received training in laser procedures during internships at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma
and at the Albuquerque, New Mexico VA Hospital, where she concentrated on managing diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Dr. Schat is a member of the Greater Louisville Optometric Society, Kentucky Optometric Association, Southeastern Council of Optometrists and the American Optometric Association. She volunteers with the Kentucky Vision Project, Nelson County Community Clinic, and at local school vision screenings and health fairs. She is a member of the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce, and has been an active member of the Women’s Council.

Dr. Schat and her husband have made their home in Bardstown with their three young children and she enjoys movies, traveling and reading.



Dr. Heather Ward Oliver

Dr. Heather Ward Oliver is a native of Salyersville, Kentucky. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Morehead State University and her Doctor of Optometry degree from Indiana University. Dr. Oliver completed internships specializing in pre and post-op management of cataract and LASIK surgery in Orlando, Florida and glaucoma and dry eye disease in San Antonio, Texas. She has also completed internships in co-managing retinal diseases, pediatrics, and low-vision. After graduation she underwent further training in laser and advanced surgical procedures with Oklahoma’s Northeastern State University.

Dr. Oliver is a member of the Greater Louisville Glaucoma Society, Kentucky Optometric Association, and the American Optometric Association. She is also a member of the 2015 Kentucky Optometric Association Young Leadership Class.

In her spare time Dr. Oliver enjoys playing mandolin, traveling with her husband, and spending time with her miniature goldendoodle. She is very happy to be in a part of this wonderful practice and is excited to join the Bardstown community.



Dr. Robert McClellan

Dr. Robert McClellan earned his degrees from the University of Louisville, Indiana University and the Southern College of Optometry.  He served as a Medical Officer of the U. S. Army in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.  He began practicing in Bardstown in 1964.  He was involved in many aspects of the community including the Kiwanis Club and the Lincoln Trail Board of Directors.

Dr. McClellan is an active member of the Greater Louisville Optometric Society, Kentucky Optometric Association, Southern Council of Optometrists, and American Optometric Association. For all his contributions to the community over the years, Dr. McClellan was inducted into the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber Hall of Fame.

In December 2014, Dr. McClellan made the decision to fully retire from practice. He is enjoying his retirement, which allows more time for family, fishing and golf.

Our practice has been serving the area for almost 50 years! Dr. Robert McClellan began the practice above Hurst Drug Store in downtown Bardstown in 1964. Later, the practice relocated to the Bardstown Medical Building.

Today you will find McClellan and Patrick Eye Care located at the site of the old health department. Each element of our new building was designed with our patients in mind.

McClellan & Patrick Eye Care has deep roots in this community. The purpose of our practice has remained the same all these years: to provide the best eye care available to Nelson County and its surrounding areas. We look forward to caring for your entire family!
